Patrick Tambay's two Ferrari wins

Patrick Tambay won two Can Am titles, then two Grands Prix for Ferrari, and finished fourth in the 1983 championship.

Patrick Tambay was born in Paris on 25 June 1949 and trained at the Winfield Racing School in 1971. He raced Formula 5000 with Carl Haas's team, and in 1977 he won the Can Am championship with Haas, the same year he made his first Formula 1 appearances, for Surtees at the French Grand Prix and then with Theodore Racing's Ensign.

McLaren signed him for 1978 and 1979, but neither season brought a podium. He went back to Can Am in 1980 and won the title a second time, then returned to Formula 1 in 1981 with Theodore and Ligier. In 1982 Ferrari called him in after the death of Gilles Villeneuve, and in his fourth race for the team he won the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, adding two more podiums before the year was out.

His second victory came at the 1983 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. He took five podiums that season and finished fourth in the championship, his best result, while Ferrari won the constructors' title. He then moved to Renault for 1984 and 1985, finishing second at the 1984 French Grand Prix from pole position, and ended his Formula 1 career with the Haas Lola team in 1986.

Tambay's record shows 114 starts, 2 wins, 5 pole positions, 2 fastest laps and 11 podiums. After Formula 1 he raced in the World Sportscar Championship, finished fourth at Le Mans in 1989 with Jaguar, and twice placed in the top three on the Dakar Rally. He died on 4 December 2022.
