From Substitute to Regular Starter

Liam Lawson reached Formula One as a substitute in 2023 and has raced for Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls since.

Born in Hastings, New Zealand, Liam Lawson won the Toyota Racing Series in 2019, placed third in Formula 2 in 2022 and was runner up in Super Formula in 2023. As a Red Bull reserve driver he made his debut for AlphaTauri at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, standing in for an injured Daniel Ricciardo, and scored his first points in Singapore.

He took over Ricciardo's seat late in 2024 and began 2025 with Red Bull Racing before returning to Racing Bulls after two races. Fifth place at the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix are his best results, and in 2026 he also drove three races for Red Bull Racing. Through the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix he has made 50 starts.
