Ireland's First Formula One Points

Derek Daly raced in Formula One from 1978 to 1982 and became the first Irish driver to score championship points.

Born in Dublin, Derek Daly won the British Formula Three Championship in 1977 and made his Formula One debut with Hesketh at the 1978 United States Grand Prix West. Later that year, driving for Ensign, he finished sixth in Canada, making him the first Irish driver to score in the championship.

With Tyrrell in 1980 he finished fourth in Argentina and Britain. A difficult year with March followed before he joined Williams partway through 1982, taking fifth places at Detroit, Zandvoort and Brands Hatch. His Formula One career ended at the 1982 Caesars Palace Grand Prix, with 49 starts from 64 entries. He then raced in CART and IMSA in the United States and became a broadcaster.
