Token, Named for Its Two Backers

Born from Ron Dennis's abandoned Formula One plan, Token raced for part of 1974 and gave Tom Pryce his World Championship debut.

Token grew out of Rondel Racing, the Formula Two team of Ron Dennis and Neil Trundle, which planned a move into Formula One for 1974 with a car designed by Ray Jessop. When the money fell short, backers Tony Vlassopulos and Ken Grob took over the project. The car became the Token RJ02, the name joining the first syllables of their first names and the designation honoring Jessop.

Tom Pryce drove it at the 1974 Belgian Grand Prix, the team's first World Championship race, and retired. David Purley failed to qualify it in Britain, and Ian Ashley finished fourteenth in Germany. The team started 3 Grands Prix that season, with its final entry in Austria.
