Wales's First Pole Sitter

Tom Pryce raced in Formula One from 1974 to 1977, taking pole at the 1975 British Grand Prix and two podiums with Shadow.

Born in Ruthin, Tom Pryce made his Formula One debut for the small Token team at the 1974 Belgian Grand Prix. After winning the Formula Three support race at Monaco that year he joined Shadow, and he scored his first point with sixth at the German Grand Prix.

In 1975 he became the first Welsh driver to start from pole, at the British Grand Prix, and he finished third in Austria. He also won the non championship Race of Champions that year, and in 1976 he took a second podium with third in Brazil. He was killed at the 1977 South African Grand Prix, his 42nd start, in a collision with a track marshal, who also died. A memorial stands in Ruthin.
