Spirit and Honda's Quiet Comeback

Founded by two former March men, Spirit brought Honda turbo power back to Formula One in 1983 before the engines moved on to Williams.

Spirit Racing was founded in 1981 by Gordon Coppuck and John Wickham, both formerly of March, with support from Bridgestone and Honda. Based in Slough, it ran Honda powered cars in Formula Two in 1982, when Thierry Boutsen won races and challenged for the title. Honda then chose Spirit to test its new turbo engine, and the team joined the World Championship midway through 1983 with Stefan Johansson, who finished seventh at the Dutch Grand Prix, its best result.

Honda soon decided to supply Williams alone, and Spirit continued with Hart and Cosworth engines and drivers such as Mauro Baldi and Huub Rothengatter. It started 23 Grands Prix from 1983 to 1985. Short of money, Wickham accepted an offer from Toleman for the team's tire contract early in 1985 and closed the Formula One operation.
