Simtek, From Consultancy to Grid

Nick Wirth's engineering firm designed cars for others before running its own team for a season and a half in the mid 1990s.

Simtek, short for Simulation Technology, was founded in 1989 by Nick Wirth and Max Mosley as an engineering consultancy based in Banbury, Oxfordshire. It built a wind tunnel, designed a Formula One car for BMW that later became the Andrea Moda, and worked for other teams. Wirth then took Simtek onto the grid itself in 1994, with Jack Brabham as a shareholder and his son David Brabham as the lead driver.

Rookie Roland Ratzenberger drove the second car and was killed in qualifying for the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. The team carried on with drivers including Jean Marc Gounon, Domenico Schiattarella and Jos Verstappen, and its best finishes were two ninth places. It started 20 Grands Prix across 1994 and 1995 before large debts and a lack of sponsorship forced it into liquidation after the 1995 Monaco Grand Prix.
