Frank Williams Racing Cars

Formula One racing team

Frank Williams Before Williams

Frank Williams's first team lived race to race for eight seasons, through tragedy and borrowed chassis, before he started again.

Frank Williams, a former driver and dealer in racing cars, began entering his friend Piers Courage in Formula One in 1969 with a Brabham, and Courage finished second at Monaco and in the United States. A partnership with De Tomaso followed in 1970, but Courage was killed when his car crashed and caught fire at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Through the early 1970s the team ran Marches and cars of its own built with backing from Politoys and then Iso and Marlboro, with drivers such as Henri Pescarolo and Carlos Pace. Money was always short. In 1975 Jacques Laffite finished second at the German Grand Prix, a result that kept the team alive. Its next name was Walter Wolf Racing, and Williams went on to form Williams Grand Prix Engineering with Patrick Head in 1977.
