The 1992 season

Nine Wins for Nigel Mansell

Nigel Mansell and Williams won the first five races and settled the championship in August, with five rounds still to go.

By early July the arithmetic was done, though the calendar insisted on carrying on. The points Nigel Mansell took away from France would, on their own, have made him champion. He had opened the season with five straight wins for Williams, at a rebuilt Kyalami, then Mexico, Brazil, Spain and San Marino, with Riccardo Patrese second in four of them. The race in South Africa was itself a return. The FIA had lifted its ban once apartheid ended, and the Grand Prix came back after seven years away.
