The 1991 season

Senna Holds Off the Williams Surge

Ayrton Senna won the first four races and then withstood a fast but fragile Williams to claim his third and last title.

From 1991, every result counted, and a bad afternoon could no longer be quietly thrown away. The custom of discarding a driver's weakest scores had been scrapped, a victory now paid ten points rather than nine, and sixteen rounds ran from Phoenix in March to Adelaide in November. The championship became a contest between Ayrton Senna's McLaren and Nigel Mansell, who had left Ferrari over the winter for Williams.
