The 1987 season

Piquet's Third, Mansell's Six

Nigel Mansell won twice as many races, but Nelson Piquet's consistency inside the same Williams team brought him a third world title.

The 1987 season was the beginning of the end for the turbo era. Turbos were to be banned from 1989, and in the meantime the rules nudged teams toward naturally aspirated engines sooner rather than later, offering those cars trophies of their own named after Jim Clark and Colin Chapman, a consolation prize with excellent names attached. Goodyear was now the only tire supplier, the first time since 1963 the sport had just one. Over sixteen rounds, from Rio de Janeiro in April to Adelaide in November, the Williams FW11B and its Honda engine were the class of the field, winning nine races.
