The 1981 season

Piquet by a Point in a Car Park

The first season under the Formula One World Championship name ended in Las Vegas, where Nelson Piquet edged Carlos Reutemann by one point.

The 1981 season was the first run under the name FIA Formula One World Championship, and it opened with the teams signing the first Concorde Agreement, which set common rules and bound every entrant to the whole championship. Sliding skirts were banned, cars had to ride six centimeters off the ground, and the South African race in February counted for nothing, stripped of its status by the dispute between FISA and FOCA: a Grand Prix in every respect except the record books. Fifteen rounds followed, from Long Beach in March to Las Vegas in October, and seven drivers won races.
