Carlos Reutemann won 12 Grands Prix for Brabham, Ferrari and Williams and lost the 1981 championship by a single point.

Carlos Reutemann was born in Santa Fe, Argentina, on 12 April 1942. He started racing in a Fiat saloon in 1965, moved through touring cars and Formula 2 at home, and went to Europe in 1970 to race a Brabham in Formula 2. Brabham then gave him his Formula 1 debut at the 1972 Argentine Grand Prix in Buenos Aires, where he started from pole position.

His first win came at the 1974 South African Grand Prix, and he added Austria and the United States that same year. Another victory in Germany in 1975 helped him to third in the championship. He joined Ferrari late in 1976 and won in Brazil the following year, then in 1978 scored four wins, in Brazil, at Long Beach, at Brands Hatch and at Watkins Glen, finishing third again.

After a season with Lotus he moved to Williams for 1980, won at Monaco and placed third for a third time with a third different team. In 1981 he won in Brazil and Belgium, but he lost the title to Nelson Piquet by one point at the final round at Caesars Palace. He retired after two races in 1982.

Reutemann made 146 starts, with 12 wins, 6 pole positions and 45 podiums, a record number of podiums at the time he stopped. He remains the most recent Argentine Grand Prix winner. He also finished third in Rally Argentina in 1980 and 1985, and later served as Governor of Santa Fe and as a national senator. He died on 7 July 2021.
