Williams Arrives, and Jones Delivers

Alan Jones held off Nelson Piquet to give Williams its first titles, in a year shadowed by the fight between FISA and FOCA.

The 1980 season changed the guard. Williams, a race winner for the first time only the year before, was now the team to beat, and Alan Jones opened the fourteen round championship by winning in Buenos Aires on a track that was coming apart beneath the cars. Ferrari and Jody Scheckter, the reigning champions, had a miserable year by contrast, and Scheckter retired at its end.
