Fangio's Fourth, With a Teammate's Help

Juan Manuel Fangio won a fourth title in Ferrari's Lancia D50, edging Stirling Moss after Peter Collins handed him his car at Monza.

With Mercedes gone, Juan Manuel Fangio needed a new team and found one at Ferrari, now the owner of Lancia's cars, the D50 among them. Stirling Moss moved to Maserati, and Peter Collins and Luigi Musso joined Eugenio Castellotti in the Ferrari lineup. The calendar shrank to eight rounds: Switzerland had banned racing, and the Suez Crisis cancelled the Dutch and Spanish Grands Prix.
