Luigi Musso, Rome's Grand Prix winner

Luigi Musso shared victory in the 1956 Argentine Grand Prix, finished third in the 1957 championship, and was killed at Reims in 1958.

Luigi Musso was born in Rome on 28 July 1924. He began in sports car racing and made his World Championship debut for Maserati at the 1953 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, finishing seventh. In 1954 he finished second at the Spanish Grand Prix for his first podium, and he won the non championship Coppa Acerbo that year.

He raced a full season for Maserati in 1955 and took third place at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. For 1956 he moved to Ferrari, and on his debut for the team he shared the winning car with Juan Manuel Fangio at the Argentine Grand Prix in Buenos Aires, the opening round of the season. A crash in a sports car race at the Nürburgring later cut that season short.

The 1957 season brought two more podiums and third place in the championship, along with a sports car win in the 1000 km of Buenos Aires for Ferrari and victory in the non championship Grand Prix de la Marne. In 1958 he and Olivier Gendebien won the Targa Florio in a Ferrari Testa Rossa, and he added two second places in the World Championship, in Argentina and at Monaco.

At the French Grand Prix at Reims on 6 July 1958, Musso left the road while chasing his teammate Mike Hawthorn and died of his injuries. In 26 starts he scored 1 win, 1 fastest lap and 7 podiums.
