The 1955 season

Mercedes Rules a Shortened Year

Mercedes and Juan Manuel Fangio dominated a championship cut to seven rounds after the Le Mans disaster, with Stirling Moss winning at home.

Seven rounds were all the 1955 championship managed, matching 1950 as the shortest season the series has run, and the reason was a disaster. In June, during the Le Mans 24 Hours, Pierre Levegh's car crashed into the spectator area, and Levegh and 83 spectators died. The French, German, Swiss and Spanish Grands Prix were cancelled in the months that followed, and Switzerland banned racing on circuits. Indianapolis, won by Bob Sweikert, brought its own losses: Bill Vukovich and Manny Ayulo were killed there.
