Bob Sweikert

Racecar driver

The 1955 Indianapolis triple

Bob Sweikert won the 1955 Indianapolis 500, the national championship and the Midwest sprint car title in a single season, a sweep no one else has managed.

Bob Sweikert was born in Los Angeles, in the United States, on May 20, 1926. He grew up in California, worked as a mechanic from the age of 16, and ran his first race for prize money at Oakland Speedway in 1947, finishing second. He became a full time driver soon after, moving from track roadsters to midget cars and, in 1949, to sprint cars.

Because the Indianapolis 500 was part of the World Championship from 1950 to 1960, his starts there appear in our record. The first came at the 1952 Indianapolis 500. Away from Indianapolis he built a reputation on the fast mile tracks, winning the 1953 Hoosier Hundred and setting speed marks at the Eastern Speed Dome in Syracuse in 1953 and 1954.

His defining year was 1955. He won the 1955 Indianapolis 500 from 14th on the grid in a Kurtis roadster, then went on to take the national championship and the Midwest sprint car title in the same season, the only driver ever to win all three in one year. The winning car is now displayed in the museum at the Indianapolis track.

Sweikert returned to Indianapolis in 1956 and finished sixth, his final World Championship start. Weeks later, in June 1956, he was killed in a sprint car race at Salem Speedway. Our record shows 5 starts, 1 win and 1 podium, all at Indianapolis, across five seasons.

0 world titles, 1 wins, 0 pole positions, 5 starts.
