Walter Wolf

Slovenian born Canadian businessman whose Walter Wolf Racing won three Grands Prix between 1977 and 1979

Walter Wolf was born in Maribor, spent his childhood in Yugoslavia, moved with his family to West Germany in 1954 and to Canada in 1958, where he became a businessman. His money first propped up Frank Williams's struggling team in 1976.

When Williams left in 1977 to start again, the operation continued as Walter Wolf Racing, with Peter Warr in charge and Jody Scheckter driving. Scheckter won three races in that first season, and the team was wound up at the end of 1979. In 1998 the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame took him in. A team that wins three times in its first year sets itself a standard that is hard to keep.
