Vijay Mallya followed his father into the drinks business and rose to chair United Spirits, the biggest distiller in India, as well as of the United Breweries Group, whose interests ran from beverages to aviation infrastructure and fertilizer.

In 2007 a consortium of Mallya and the Dutch father and son Jan and Michiel Mol bought the Spyker Formula One team, and from 2008 it raced as Force India, with Mallya taking over as team principal for 2009. Under his ownership the team grew into a respected midfield force, finishing fourth in the constructors' championship in 2016 and 2017, well above what its budget suggested. He co owned the team until 2018, when its assets were bought by a group led by Lawrence Stroll and it continued as Racing Point.
