Tsutomu Tomita began at Toyota in 1969 developing engines, and by 1987 he oversaw every racing engine the company made. Elected to the board in 1996 with responsibility for international motorsport, he is widely seen as the man who pushed Toyota into Formula One in 2002, and he insisted it come as a full works team rather than merely an engine supplier.

In 2003 he moved to the Cologne factory to oversee the team in person, and in January 2004 he became team principal. He also widened Toyota's reach by supplying engines to Jordan and later Williams. In 2007 he returned to Japan, handing over to Tadashi Yamashina, and became president of Fuji Speedway. An engine man to the core, he wanted the whole car or nothing.
