Tony Vandervell made his fortune with Thinwall bearings, and his early racing cars were modified Ferraris called Thinwall Specials, run partly to test the product. He was one of BRM's first backers, but he soon lost patience with how it was run and in 1951 decided to build his own team at his factory in Acton.

The name Vanwall blended his own with his bearing's. He had a gift for spotting talent, bringing in Colin Chapman and Frank Costin on the engineering side, and in 1957 Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks shared the team's first championship win at the British Grand Prix. In 1958 Vanwall won six of the eleven races and the first constructors' championship. He announced in January 1959 that he would not continue, and he died in March 1967.
