Tony Purnell studied mechanical engineering at Manchester and won a Kennedy Scholarship to MIT, where his master's dissertation was on Formula One aerodynamics. After research at Cambridge he founded Pi Research, which grew into a global racing electronics business and was bought by Ford in 1999.

That put him inside Ford's racing division alongside Jaguar, and in late 2002 he was given the job of team principal. Results improved steadily, with Mark Webber signed to replace Eddie Irvine, but Ford announced its withdrawal in 2004. Purnell went looking for a buyer, and on the 15th of November 2004 Red Bull bought the team. Christian Horner succeeded him in January 2005. He later worked for the FIA as a technical consultant. Finding a team a new owner is one way to guarantee its future, if not your own.
