Tony Fernandes, a native of Kuala Lumpur, went to boarding school at Epsom College in England and studied accounting at the London School of Economics. He kept the books as financial controller at Virgin Communications, Richard Branson's company, before building his own empire, turning the ailing AirAsia into a thriving low cost carrier.

In 2010 he took a new team into Formula One as Lotus Racing. It became Team Lotus in 2011 and Caterham after his company bought Caterham Cars, and he sold it to investors from Switzerland and the Middle East on the 2nd of July 2014. Along the way he made a wager with Branson, whose Virgin team also joined in 2010: the loser would work a flight on the winner's airline dressed as a steward. It was Branson who lost, and Fernandes printed a poster to celebrate.
