Tom Walkinshaw was born on a farm near Penicuik and won the Scottish Formula Ford title in 1969. He drove touring cars for Ford and BMW, founded Tom Walkinshaw Racing, and in 1984 became European touring car champion driving a V12 Jaguar XJS. TWR grew into a business of 1,500 employees across four countries, designing and building racing and road cars.

In 1991 he became engineering director at Benetton, which won the 1995 world title, and he helped bring Michael Schumacher to that team. In 1995 he bought half of Ligier, then took over Arrows instead, signing reigning champion Damon Hill for 1997. He ran Arrows until it stopped racing in 2002 and also owned Gloucester Rugby. He died on the 12th of December 2010, aged 64.
