Teddy Yip was born in Medan, Sumatra, in 1907, was educated in the Netherlands and became a Dutch citizen, and in the 1940s moved to Hong Kong, where he built a business in travel, hotels and casinos. He spoke a remarkable range of languages, from six varieties of Chinese to Dutch, French, German, Malay and Thai.

He raced for fun in the 1950s and began sponsoring drivers in 1974, founding Theodore Racing two years later. Ron Tauranac built him a car, and Keke Rosberg drove it to a surprise win in the rain at the 1978 International Trophy at Silverstone. The team raced its own TY01 in 1981 and merged with Ensign before stopping. In Macau his team won the Grand Prix many times, most famously with Ayrton Senna in 1983. He died on the 11th of July 2003.
