Tadashi Yamashina joined Toyota in 1977 and rose through its engineering divisions to become project general manager in vehicle engineering in 1998. In 2001 he was made president of Toyota's technical center in the United States, and in 2006 he became Toyota Motorsport's vice chairman.

In June 2007 he succeeded Tsutomu Tomita as chairman and team principal of the Formula One team in Cologne. He led it through its last three seasons, and after Toyota left Formula One at the close of 2009 he stayed on as chairman of the Cologne company. When Ove Andersson died in 2008, it was Yamashina who spoke for the team's grief. Corporate careers rarely end on a race track, but his passed through one.
