British team manager who started in Formula One as a catering truck driver and became managing director of Alpine in 2025

Steve Nielsen began training for the police, resigned after 11 months, and found his way into Formula One driving a truck for a catering company. Team Lotus took him onto its test team in 1986 and ran its spare parts department, then worked his way through Tyrrell, Benetton, Honda and Arrows before spending nearly ten years as Enstone's sporting director.

Later he served Caterham, Toro Rosso and Williams, became Formula One's own sporting director in 2017 and the FIA's in 2023. On the 4th of July 2025 Alpine named him managing director, running the team day to day from September and reporting to Flavio Briatore. From delivering the lunch to running the team is a promotion path few paddock careers can match.
