Rocco Benetton, son of Luciano Benetton, grew up in Treviso, studied mechanical engineering at Boston University from 1989, and spent several years on Wall Street as a hedge fund specialist in New York. In 1997 he came home to Europe as commercial director of the family's Formula One team.

The following year he became its chief executive, succeeding David Richards, and ran it for four seasons. When it became clear that a family clothing company could not match the spending of the car makers arriving in the sport, he directed the sale of the team to Renault in 2000, a record agreement at the time that kept the Benetton name on the cars for two more seasons. Knowing when to sell is a skill too.
