Riad Asmat, son of the Perodua chairman Asmat Kamaludin, was a general manager in the top office at Proton and looked after its A1 Team Malaysia program. When the 1Malaysia F1 Team was formed to enter Formula One in 2010 as Lotus Racing, he was appointed its chief executive, at 38.

He stayed as the team became Caterham, and also ran Caterham Racing's GP2 team as its principal. Tony Fernandes and his fellow shareholders later made him group chief executive of the whole Caterham Group, from the Formula One team to the road cars and merchandise. By 2018 he was running AirAsia Group, a reminder that in the Fernandes empire, racing and flying were never far apart.
