Swiss team founder who took his Hinwil team from sports cars into Formula One in 1993

Peter Sauber trained as an electrician, sold cars in Hinwil and raced a Volkswagen Beetle up Swiss hills. Rather than join the family traffic light business, he built his first car, the C1, in his parents' basement and won the 1970 Swiss hill climb championship in it. Every Sauber since has carried a C, for his wife Christiane.

His sports car partnership with Mercedes from 1985 helped launch the careers of Michael Schumacher and Karl Wendlinger, and in 1993 Sauber entered Formula One on its own. BMW bought the majority in 2005, but when it withdrew in 2009 Sauber bought the team back and regained ownership for 2010. In October 2012 he stepped back and handed the team principal's role to Monisha Kaltenborn. He retired from motorsport in 2016.
