Mattia Binotto was born in Lausanne to Italian parents and studied engineering there before joining Ferrari's test team as an engine engineer in 1995. He stayed 27 years, through the Schumacher title run and up the ladder to head of the engine department in 2013 and chief technical officer in 2016.

In 2019 he replaced Maurizio Arrivabene as team principal and held the post until he announced his resignation in November 2022. Audi's project brought him back in 2024 as an executive at Sauber, and he stepped in as interim team principal for two races in 2025. In March 2026 he took over the team principal role at Audi, renamed in April as chief executive and team principal. Lausanne to Maranello to Hinwil makes for a well traveled engine man.
