British turnaround specialist who was chief executive of Lotus F1 and steered its sale back to Renault in 2015

Matthew Carter made his career repairing companies in difficulty. Between 1999 and 2004 he had his own firm buying, stabilizing and reselling troubled firms, and he then spent nine years as a senior investment manager at Bridgehouse Capital, often stepping into executive roles at the companies it backed.

When Bridgehouse invested in the Enstone team, Carter became chief executive of Lotus F1 in 2014. The cars were still quick, but the finances were strained, and his job was cost control, talks with creditors and the search for a secure future. He led the process that returned the team to Renault at the end of 2015, ready to race again as a works outfit in 2016. In Formula One, finding a buyer can be harder than finding a tenth of a second.
