Marcin Budkowski studied at the École Polytechnique in Paris and specialized in aeronautics and aerodynamics at Supaero and Imperial College London. He began as an aerodynamicist at Prost in 2001, then spent five years at Ferrari and seven at McLaren, where he became head of aerodynamics in 2012.

He crossed to the FIA in 2014 and led its Formula One technical department from 2017, before joining Renault as executive technical director and overseeing the day to day running of the team as it became Alpine. He was a director of Alpine until January 2022, spent a spell as a television analyst for Polish viewers, and on the 12th of August 2026 became team principal of Cadillac.
