Luis Pérez Sala started in karts and production cars, raced in the European and Italian Formula 3 championships, and won races in Formula 3000 in 1986. He drove for Minardi in Formula One alongside Adrián Campos, and later raced touring cars.

In July 2011 he joined Hispania, the team Campos had founded, as a consultant, and on the 15th of December 2011 HRT named him to succeed Colin Kolles as team principal. He led the Spanish team through 2012, its final season. It was a fitting coda that a former teammate's project should end in his hands.
