French engineer and strategist who was chief executive of Alpine and its Formula One team from 2021

Laurent Rossi trained in fluid mechanics in Toulouse and in engines at IFP School in Paris, then spent his first years at Renault tuning gasoline engines, including hybrid concepts. A Harvard MBA took him to the Boston Consulting Group in New York in 2009, and in 2012 he joined Google to look after its relationships with car makers.

Renault rehired him in 2018 to work on strategy, and when Cyril Abiteboul departed in January 2021 he was appointed chief executive of Alpine, reporting to Renault's chief executive Luca de Meo. His first season brought Esteban Ocon's win in Hungary, a podium for Fernando Alonso in Qatar and fifth place in the constructors' standings. Engines, consulting and search engines: a varied route to the pit wall.
