Laurent Mekies studied engineering at ESTACA in Paris and Loughborough, then came into Formula One with the engine maker Asiatech. When Asiatech closed in 2002 he stayed at Minardi, became a race engineer, and remained as the team turned into Toro Rosso, where he was chief engineer from 2006 to 2012.

He then crossed to the governing side as the FIA's safety director and deputy race director, before moving to Ferrari as its sporting director in 2018 and later racing director. In 2024 he took charge of Red Bull's second team, by then called Visa Cash App RB, and on the 9th of July 2025 he was named to lead Red Bull Racing as chief executive and team principal. He has now seen the sport from the engine bay, the timing screens and the steward's chair, which is a fairly complete education.
