Kenneth McAlpine, born in Cobham in Surrey, was a grandson of Sir Robert McAlpine, the Scottish civil engineer. He started seven World Championship Grands Prix, the first at the 1952 British Grand Prix for Connaught, the team from Send in Surrey that he backed generously.

As an owner he celebrated Tony Brooks's celebrated Syracuse Grand Prix win of 1955. The team was broken up in 1957. McAlpine went back to the family's civil engineering business and later founded a successful wine estate at Lamberhurst in Kent. He died on the 8th of April 2023, aged 102.
