José Ramón Carabante, born in Málaga in 1952, built Grupo Hispania, a property business active in Europe and the Americas, and also owned the basketball club CB Murcia. He held shares in the Campos Meta Formula One team, which had won an entry for the 2010 season.

When money ran short just before its first race, Carabante took full control and renamed it Hispania Racing F1 Team, after his own company. Money remained tight through its first year, and in July 2011 he sold the team to the investment company Thesan Capital. The team closed after the 2012 season.
