John Howett's Toyota career began in the late 1970s, coordinating the Brussels based Toyota Team Europe, then run by Ove Andersson. He moved back to England in 1980 to work in after sales service, returned to Belgium in 1991, and rose to vice president for sales and marketing at Toyota and Lexus.

In early 2003 he moved to Cologne as president of Toyota Motorsport, which ran the Formula One team, and he held the post until June 2010. In 2007 he set the team the target of catching BMW Sauber in third place. Toyota announced its withdrawal from Formula One in 2009. He began and ended his Toyota career in the same racing family, which shows a certain loyalty.
