John Booth raced through the 1980s in Formula Ford and in British Formula 3, then sold the family butcher's business in 1990 to found Manor Motorsport, named after the manor house in Anston where he lived. Over 20 years Manor won some 171 races and 19 titles in the junior categories, with Lewis Hamilton among its graduates.

Manor's application to join Formula One for 2010 was accepted in June 2009, after the team found the GP2 entry list full. It raced as Virgin Racing and later as Marussia, and Booth, at first the sporting director, took over as team principal less than a month after the launch. He resigned at the end of 2015 and from 2016 to 2018 was Toro Rosso's racing director. From the butcher's counter to the Formula One grid is a journey that Guy Ligier would have recognized.
