Graeme Lowdon grew up in Stocksfield, Northumberland, and studied mechanical engineering at Sheffield before an MBA at Newcastle. Working in power stations and then in international sales for ABB, he spotted that one prospective customer also owned an IndyCar team and helped arrange a sponsorship deal. Business and racing have been intertwined for him ever since.

He joined Manor Motorsport at the end of 2000 and cofounded Nomad Digital, which provides wifi on trains. Virgin Rail was a customer, and those links helped create Virgin Racing, the Formula One team Manor entered in 2010, with Lowdon as chief executive until 2015. In December 2024 he was named team principal of Cadillac, guiding the new American team into its first season in 2026 before Marcin Budkowski replaced him that August. Not many people can say that a train connection got them onto the grid.
