Giancarlo Minardi grew up in Faenza around his family's Fiat dealership and fuel station and built a successful truck business of his own. He raced a tuned Fiat 500 in hill climbs from 1968, then turned to running teams, winning the Formula Italia title in 1973 and taking Michele Alboreto to a Formula Two win at Misano in 1981.

Formula One followed in 1985. Money was a constant worry, and he sold most of the team in 1996, but he stayed as managing director through Paul Stoddart's ownership from 2001 until Red Bull turned Minardi into Toro Rosso. His real gift was spotting talent: Jarno Trulli, Mark Webber, Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso all made their Formula One debuts in his cars. Few teams have scored so few points and launched so many careers.
