Luxembourg investor whose Genii Capital owned the Enstone team from 2009 and who was president of Lotus F1 until 2015

Gérard López grew up beside a Luxembourg steelworks and went to Miami University in Ohio on a partial basketball scholarship. He founded a web services company while still a student, then cofounded Mangrove Capital Partners, an early backer of Skype.

The racing bug came through Eric Lux and his Gravity Sport Management, and in 2009 Genii Capital took majority control of the Renault team. Soon Coca Cola, Unilever and Microsoft were on board as sponsors, and the team raced on as Lotus F1, with López as its president until 2015. When Éric Boullier resigned in January 2014, López took over as team principal himself. He has since owned several football clubs, which may be the only business more expensive than Formula One.
