French Le Mans winner who managed Renault's factory Formula One team and then ran his own Larrousse team from 1987 to 1994

Gérard Larrousse was a rally driver first, winning the French championship in an Alpine A110 and the 1969 Tour de Corse in a Porsche. On circuits he took victory in Sebring's 12 Hours in 1971, and with Henri Pescarolo he won Le Mans for Matra in 1973 and 1974.

After running the Elf Switzerland Formula Two team, he moved into management at Renault, hiring Jean Sage to run its new Formula One team in 1977, and he led the factory squad through its final full seasons in 1984 and 1985. From 1987 to 1994 he ran his own team, Larrousse, with various partners. Its best year was 1990, sixth in the constructors' championship. A lack of money ended plans for 1995, which is how most small teams leave.
