Before he ran Formula One teams, Fred Vasseur ran the teams that fed them. Born in Draveil in 1968 and trained as an automotive engineer, he founded ASM in 1996 and then ART Grand Prix with Nicolas Todt, whose cars carried Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton to the GP2 titles of 2005 and 2006. A useful habit of hiring future champions early.

He led Renault's returning works team in 2016, moved to Sauber in July 2017 and stayed six seasons, through its years as Alfa Romeo. In 2023 he replaced Mattia Binotto at Ferrari, and Carlos Sainz delivered his first win with the team in Singapore that year. On the side he founded Spark Racing Technology, which built the first Formula E chassis.
