Irish insolvency accountant who became de facto team principal of Caterham as its administrator in late 2014

Finbarr O'Connell, born in Manorhamilton in Ireland, is a chartered accountant who specializes in restructuring and recovery. In late 2014 his team at Smith and Williamson was appointed to administer Caterham Sports Limited, which included the Formula One team, and he found himself its de facto team principal.

The cars missed the United States and Brazilian Grands Prix while he tried both to find a buyer and to raise money to race. Caterham launched a crowdfunding appeal for £2.35 million to reach the final round in Abu Dhabi, and it succeeded. O'Connell attended that race officially as team principal. Insolvency practitioners do not usually get a pit wall pass; he earned one.
