Federico Gastaldi's link with the Enstone team ran back to the 1990s, when he looked after the Benetton group's interests in Argentina. He also helped organize Argentina's Grand Prix from 1995 to 1998, the last years the race was held.

He came to Lotus in 2010 to lead its business development, and when Éric Boullier left for McLaren the team reorganized its management. On the 14th of March 2014 Gastaldi stepped up to become deputy team principal, working alongside owner Gérard López in charge of the team through 2014 and 2015, the final seasons before Renault bought it back. A man who knows sponsorship knows that a long relationship pays.
