Éric Boullier trained in aeronautical and spacecraft engineering, then found that racing cars were the more interesting kind of aircraft. He ran DAMS and its A1 Team France operation, then managed young drivers at Gravity Sport Management, whose backers included Gérard López.

When López's Genii Capital bought into Renault's team, Boullier was named team principal on the 5th of January 2010 although he had never worked in a Formula One team. The team finished fifth in 2010 and again in 2011 as Lotus Renault GP, and he stayed on as it became Lotus F1. He resigned in January 2014 and five days later became racing director at McLaren, a post he held until July 2018. In 2026 he took over as chief executive of the company that promotes the World Rally Championship.
