Enzo Coloni first raced internationally in 1974, as a guest entrant in Formula Italia, where he won a race, and finished fourth in the series the following year. He went on to race in Italian and European Formula 3, Formula 2000 and European Formula 2.

In 1987 he founded his own team, Coloni, which built Formula One cars and also competed in Formula 3000, GP2, Formula 3 and other junior series. His son Paolo Coloni followed him into racing. The Coloni workshops at Passignano sul Trasimeno later housed the Andrea Moda team after Coloni's Formula One years. A man who builds cars for every rung of the ladder clearly believes in the climb.
